A Complete Backyard Transformation
This project transformed the property into a cohesive, low-maintenance outdoor environment designed around how the homeowners wanted to live and enjoy their space. From structural improvements and outdoor entertaining areas to a meaningful Japanese-inspired garden, each element was designed to feel like part of one complete landscape
The Homeowners' Goals
The homeowners wanted to make better use of their property while creating an outdoor space that was functional, inviting, and easier to maintain. An existing retaining wall was beginning to fail, creating an opportunity to rethink the surrounding landscape rather than simply replace the wall.
The project grew into a complete transformation that brought together structural landscaping, comfortable outdoor living areas, and highly personal garden spaces. The goal was to make each area distinct while ensuring the entire property felt connected and intentional.

Creating a Cohesive Plan
Tydan developed a comprehensive landscape plan that addressed both the practical needs of the property and the homeowners' vision for how they wanted to use the space.
A new structural retaining wall provided the foundation for the redesigned landscape, allowing the property to incorporate an upper patio and terraced planting areas. Hardscaping and pathways were planned to connect the different areas of the yard and create a natural flow through the property.
For the outdoor living area, the design took inspiration from the contemporary architecture of the home, incorporating clean lines, Permacon hardscaping, a custom outdoor kitchen, and an aluminum pergola for protection from sun and rain.
The Japanese-inspired garden took a more personal approach. Tydan worked closely with the homeowner to position symbolic boulders representing family members, select Japanese-inspired plantings, and incorporate a custom walkway featuring a unique stone sharpening wheel accent. Together, these different areas were planned as parts of one larger landscape rather than a collection of separate features.
What We Built
Patio & Hardscaping
Durable patios, walkways, and Permacon hardscaping create inviting outdoor spaces while connecting the different areas of the property.
Outdoor Kitchen
A custom outdoor kitchen with granite countertops provides a functional and stylish space for cooking, dining, and entertaining outdoors.
Retaining Walls
A Unilock structural retaining wall replaced the failing existing wall, providing lasting support while helping define the new terraced landscape.
Landscape Planting
Terraced and Japanese-inspired plantings were carefully selected and positioned to complement the hardscaping and bring softness, character, and seasonal interest to the property.
Outdoor Lighting
Landscape lighting adds ambiance, highlights key features, and allows the homeowners to continue enjoying the outdoor spaces into the evening.
Overhead Structures
A sleek aluminum pergola provides protection from sun and rain while complementing the contemporary design of the outdoor kitchen and living area.
The Result
The completed landscape gives the homeowners a property that is more functional, cohesive, and enjoyable while remaining practical to maintain.
What began with the need to address a failing retaining wall became an opportunity to reconsider the property as a whole. The new patios, outdoor kitchen, pergola, retaining wall, plantings, pathways, and lighting work together to create spaces for entertaining, relaxing, and spending time outdoors.
At the same time, personal details give the landscape a character that belongs specifically to this home and family. The Japanese-inspired garden, symbolic boulders, and custom stone accent create a quieter, more reflective space alongside the home's contemporary outdoor living areas.
The result is a landscape that balances structure and beauty, modern outdoor living and meaningful garden design — all brought together as one unified property.
